DIME

I go by Dime.

I am a first generation Xicana,

an educator, a writer, a mother,

cultural worker, and a healer.

I feel most inspired to create when I'm passionate and connected to the project.  - Dime

Xicana graffiti writer and educator, Dime is a first generation Mexican-American born and raised in East Oakland.  A lifelong artist who began painting graffiti as a young teenager, Dime has carried on her family's intergenerational traditions of cultural and spiritual resistance into adulthood by becoming an educator, organizer, and public artist for community empowerment, healing, self-determination and political activism via her involvement in the Xicana Movement and Oakland's Eastside Arts Alliance.  She passes down ancestral teachings to new generations, and her work builds bridges between disciplines; fine art, print making, murals and graffiti art.

Dime first heard about Few&Far in 2011, the way exciting news spreads in tight knit creative communities, via word of mouth.  "I heard a group of women graffiti artists were painting a huge production in town, so Agana and I drove all over searching for the wall.  My passion for painting and desire to collaborate with others literally drove me to meet these talented ladies. After chippin' it up with some of the crew members, TOOFLY gave me a spot under one of her fly chicks, and next thing you know, we all became Few and Far...reppin' hard."  Dime has worked as a collaborative member of Xochitlceive, Few& Far, and as Dignidad Rebelde's apprentice.

In her own words, Dime describes her creative process as, "Sketch.  Laugh.  Music.  Paint." - Dime

"I use my tools

the spray to heal myself

not knowing that eventually

it would help heal others

my community and my neighborhood

what was good, if it was only for self

that's what the paint did

the images, the love

the energy put into pieces

helped me heal others

it's no longer my name and my pieces

but murals for community healing

and my neighborhood.

I could do that."
